In the summer, on hot nights, when I've had enough scotch and Hot Mama's is somehow out of pizza, I can now turn to the newish late night street food vendor, Taco Gringos.
These two virile gents (who I'm pretty sure are dealing another latin american dish out of the back) dish up three taco options each night from 8 to whenever people stop coming. There is a genuine vegetarian option each night. On the fourth of July in homage to our homeland, they served potato salad tacos. Get that picture of yellow Safeway Select tub o' salad out of your head. This was rustic style red potato salad garnished with caramelized onions. It was quite tasty. Tacos are $2 which is all I had and there were three of us so they gave us three for the price of one.
Tonight it was cactus salad over soy protein and potato. I have never had cactus and I am happy to report that it was delicious. The cactus was firm and succulent and the soy protein was simply seasoned but full of savory flavor.
Next time you are drunk and/or hungry on Olive street, try Taco Gringos.
